Dog Walking
Walking shelter dogs is different from walking a family pet. Some may not be used to leashes, react to other dogs, or pull with excitement. Our Lead Dog Walking Volunteers help with training and scheduling. The goal is to give each dog outdoor time, build leash skills, watch their behavior, and practice good manners.
Must be at least 16 years old.

Doggie Day Out

FLEXIBLE
Laundry
Our shelter does tons of laundry every day—towels, blankets, and sheets used for cleaning and bedding. Some items can be pretty dirty, so it’s not for the squeamish! Clean laundry keeps our animals comfortable and healthy. Volunteers are welcome to help on-site or pick up loads to wash at home—and while the machines run, there’s often time for a few cat or dog snuggles!
Must be at least 14 years old.

OFF-SITE
Event Assistance
Take adoptable dogs to community events and help them interact with the public. Volunteers assist with handling dogs, answering basic questions, and creating positive experiences for potential adopters. This role helps support outreach efforts and increase animal visibility in the community.
Must be at least 16 years old and have confirmed and reliable transport to and from events.

VOLUNTEER FAQ
How do volunteers help?
Volunteers help in a wide variety of ways. They help us clean, do laundry, restock food and litter. They also help with socializing our animals through dog walking and training as well as working with animals who are scared to be more comfortable around humans.
Individuals and groups are all welcome to volunteer! Volunteers must be at least 12 years of age, and those under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult. If you are under the age of 18, you must get parental permission prior to volunteering.
I want to volunteer! How do I start?
If you're interested in volunteering at the shelter, please let us know by filling out the Volunteer Application at the top of this page. We will reach out to you shortly after to find out more about your areas of interest.
Can I just show up?
We encourage you to set a time with our volunteer coordinator to ensure we have staff available to help you learn, especially your first time volunteering. If you'd like to work in a group, setting a time helps us coordinate jobs that can accommodate the full group.
What should I wear?
I'm already a volunteer! How do I sign up for more shifts?
We suggest comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting dirty or torn.
If you have volunteered with us before, you can use the Volunteer Portal link at the top of this page to schedule shifts. With questions, please email info@bartholomewhumane.org.
