Doggy Day Out

Help a shelter pup have a fun day out as your shopping, hiking, or lunch companion!

Find more information below and email our Canine Team Lead, Belicia Garcia, to learn more.

Please take pictures of your pup while you're out and about! These help us market our dogs for adoption. Photos may be uploaded below.

Please note that by uploading the images, you consent to them being used for marketing, including (but not limited to) on the Bartholomew County Humane Society Facebook, Instagram, website, and/or printed marketing materials. If you need to make any edits, please do so before uploading the image(s) (ex. cropping out your face if you do not want it in the photo).

How does it work?

1. Fill out a volunteer application here or in person at the shelter.

2. Complete a brief dog handling training with staff.

3. Choose a date and plan an outing for your shelter doggy.

4. Sign our protocol and we'll get a copy of your ID before you take the dog on an adventure with you!

Why do a Doggy Day Out?

Doggy Day Out gives our shelter dogs a break from the stressful shelter life and a chance to show their true nature.

This then helps staff learn more about the dogs, which makes them more adoptable!

What should we do?

  • Take your pup to pet-friendly stores, such as PetCo, Pet Supplies Plus, Rural King, TJ Maxx, Homegoods, Lowe's, or Specks

  • Go to a park, go for a hike, stroll through your neighborhood or around downtown, or take some time to relax in your backyard

  • Grab a snack or pup cup together

  • Other adventures are welcome as long as they fit within our protocols

  • Take plenty of pictures!
