Adoption Information and Process

Anyone wishing to adopt an animal is welcome to visit the shelter to see the animals in person.  Photos and descriptions are also posted online at happydog.petfinder.com. Featured pets appear on this site in the ‘Our Pets‘ gallery and are featured weekly in The Republic newspaper in Columbus, Indiana.

Adopting a pet through the humane society is a simple procedure that begins by having prospective adopters complete an Adoption Application.  The application collects information about the following:

  • Certain factors about the adopter’s current lifestyle
  • Number and types of other pets in the home
  • Children
  • Where the pet would be kept
  • Previous pet experience

Our staff will review this information with you to help you make the best choice about the pet you wish to adopt*.  Fees for adoption are $115, including a non-refundable $20 application fee due at the time of application.  The remainder of the fee is paid when the pet is picked up.

*The humane society reserves the right to determine the most suitable home for all animals at the shelter.
